Being on the run wasn’t new to Brendan Rourke, nor was hiding from the police. He’d been running and hiding most of his life and, in some strange way, it suited him. He was, after all, a Traveller, a member of the Irish Walking People. Some called them Tinkers. The gypsy life was all he’d known. He’d be a fugitive if no one were chasing him.It was the pending charges that unsettled him. They scared the living hell out of him. Triple murder. If the Irish Garda caught him he’d be down for life. When they got him, he’d hang himself and not be the first Tinker to die in custody. His people didn’t handle lock-up well. When the ex-priest offered the passport Brendan grabbed it and made his way as far as his money permitted. Safely in San Francisco he settled into a routine he found most agreeable.He worked for a bondsman in the Tenderloin. He made his living snagging bail jumpers. The district was a fugitive’s sanctuary, at least until Brendan got there. Given his own tenuous situation this job might seem ironic, perhaps even a bit hypocritical, but it required less moral justification than most of his previous activities. With his life experience combined with a touch of Tinker magic, he had an absolute gift for the work. It wasn’t as big a leap as one would imagine going from hunted to hunter. He usually knew the direction his prey would run and where they would hide. As a concession to the nature of the job he slept away from the Tenderloin. He leased a dingy flat in a backstreet of Chinatown and acquired an orphan kitten for a roommate. She was all the company he required. Brendan would be happy to stay here forever and he might have until the Foreknowledge made it clear that it was time again to hit the wind.An Immigration agent was making some intrusive inquiries. By himself, this guy would have posed little challenge. More serious was the fact that members of the clan had found him and they would not leave him be with a simple social call. He missed his family, of course. At least he missed what they once were, not the merciless thieves they’d become. Still, he could probably have found a way to string them along until they lost interest and went on their way.He could not deny that something was amiss. In the past, it had taken far less a signal to disappear. It was a time to cut ties, not be drawn into to new ones. He didn’t need the little psycho girl who’d glued her tongue to his windshield. And he had absolutely no interest in babysitting the Viet gang boy who seemed to think Brendan could improve his life.Brendan was just a Tinker and, about the rest of humanity, he gave not a damn. He sought solitude, not redemption.He should have been out the door the when the fog rolled in, stolen away under the cover of night. But this night the banshees were about, no question.
